Fundraising the Dead A Museum Mystery Sheila Connolly Books

I will be back for more adventures in this third series that I have read by the talented Sheila Connolly. It took a chapter or two to get my bearings on the Museum Mystery series, but despite suspicion & guessing and of whodunit( ok, so I was 50% right), there is enough wealth of background to keep me coming back for more. Eleanor(Nell) Pratt is the protagonist in the Philadelphia based series. Nell is also a very relateable protagonist mostly for her smarts, her appreciation of treasured legacies and her ability to not let "no" stand in her way. If it doesn't feel right, then she stays the course, as would I..it becomes a personal challenge and sense of duty to find out the who , and what happens to a most dedicated but not always appreciated employee of the Pennsylvania Antiquarian Society is found murdered after a series of manuscripts from several collections go missing. This is the platform from which this series takes off. I was never one to give up on this one and look forward to the next, Let's Play Dead.

Fundraising the Dead A Museum Mystery Sheila Connolly Books Reviews

Having enjoyed Sheila Connolly's apple orchard series, I wanted to give this book a try. I liked her characters. Sounds like several of them will be back so I'm looking forward to the character development along with the new mysteries. I also really like the location this series is going to be set in. Philadelphia is a great city to visit, with its rich history. The book was a quick read for me as well as a very nice way to spend an afternoon sitting by a lake.
Nothing to write home about but a pleasant first entry in the series. I knew who the "baddie" was early on and it was just a matter of plowing through the book to figure out how he/she was caught (don't want to give anything away). Enjoyable way to kill some time.
The author kept my interest throughout most of the book. There is a little too much detail about procedures for keeping historical records and problems in fund raising. The murder mystery seems to be of lesser importance than the document thefts. Nell, the main character is smart and capable and is an adult - not some spaced out 30 something acting like a 15 year old that I find in so many books. So I enjoyed this book and will read more from tis author
I have enjoyed the orchard series by this author, so I was excited to try the new historical society series written by her. I think that I like this new series even more!!!
What I particularly liked is that the heroine, Nell, is a more realistic woman than alot of cozy mystery gals are. Some of them are just too corny and "gosh, golly" for me. Nell & the other characters utter an occasional four letter word (not foul or gratuitous)and they have sexual experiences (again, tastefully described). They live in the real world.
The plot and the mystery were very well done. The fact that the story is set in Philadelphia, where I live was a great bonus for me also.
I'm looking forward to the next installment in this series.
I found this to be a rather odd book, beginning with the strange and awkward title. I know what the author was getting at, but it was awkward nonetheless. The book attracted me because of its locale - an historical society in Philadelphia - a locale with which I am familiar. I was delighted each time the author mentioned some little thing I might have encountered while working in an archives. There was a smile of recognition on almost every page. But the writing got me down. The narrative was straightforward and pedantic. And there really wasn't much suspense. I was quite disappointed, but it was fun poking around in the musty, dusty stacks again after many years..
As an advid reader I tend to look for authors that have a series or two under their belt. Shelia is the newest author to grace space in my busy life. I enjoyed the pace and storyline of this book. I admire the main character Nell. In trying to keep things in the society running smoothly she has a big problem dropped in her lap. Not only does she step it up but she doesn't back down. I look forward to reading more of Nell's adventures.
I liked this book because I felt immersed in Nell's life. Usually I don't like too many descriptions but this book made the explanations about the life in the museum interesting. Besides, there were lots of dialogues too.

Nell is intelligent but she also has a very "safe" emotional life. She's much more passionate about her work than about her social life. Which is interesting. Obviously she has some emotional issues which might be explained in future books. It's also refreshing when the main character is not obsessed with finding the love of her life or depressed just because she's single.

Nell is good at her job but she's not an expert on historic artifacts which makes it easier for me to relate to her.

I have to confess that I'm not a fan of the other mysteries series by the author of this book. I have read samples of books from her over series and they have a different feeling. So just because you love her other series doesn't mean you'll like this one. And vice versa.
