Veiled A Standalone Paranormal Urban Fantasy eBook Karina Halle

You know that feeling when you wait forever for something and the final product leaves you disappointed because you hyped it up so much? Yah. This ISN’T one of those times!!

I waited YEARS for this book. YEARS. Karina Halle said she wasn’t writing it. She’s evil. Tortured me with one sample chapter a while ago on a website. Then….nothing. Until now. For those of us who follow (ahem *stalk*) her on social media and various other locations, the surprise of a lifetime came when she started updating chapters about a month ago. OMG. Then, the announcement of the book.

Okay, here’s the deal. This is a paranormal book, with some sexy times and humor thrown in. If you’re a fan if her Experiment in Terror series, you’ll see some familiar characters. If you’ve read The Devil’s Metal or The Devil’s Reprise, same thing. If you’re expecting the same thing from EIT, you shouldn’t. Ava isn't Perry, Jay isn't Dex, and that's okay. It's still fantastic.

This is Ava’a book. Little Fifteen, all grown up. She’s tasked with saving her mother from the depths of hell, and you know that’s not just going to happen easily or quickly. Seeing old characters through her eyes is entertaining and endearing (I’m lookin’ at you Dex!). There are moments when I stopped reading in the dark, because…hello! Monsters in the closet! There are other times I couldn’t stop highlighting my favorite passages that made me laugh!

If you haven’t read anything other than her contemporary romance books, I encourage you to give this one a try. It’s a stand-alone, and while a paranormal/horror book, it won’t leave you with scars. Well…not many.

Thank you Karina for the gem! I am hoping for more, but am happy you finally gave this one to your fans! Forever, #TeamJayda

Veiled A Standalone Paranormal Urban Fantasy eBook Karina Halle Reviews

4-4.5 stars
Rating R/MA for dark, paranormal/demon themes and some steam

First off, let me say that I'm a tough rater. Most books I read are rated at 3 stars, maybe 3.5 stars. I've rated very few books as 4 stars or above, because I believe the books have to be really amazing to get that rating. So a 4-4.5 star rating for Veiled means that I think this book is AMAZING! And I really, really like it! The Author, Karina Halle, is an amazing talent who writes across multiple genres seamlessly. She's an expert world-builder and character builder; she sucks you right into the story and the people.

This is a standalone book, so if you hear about the EIT (Experiment in Terror) series, yes there is a bit of a cross-over. But Veiled is a fresh, new story that stands on its own. You don't have to read the EIT series to appreciate it. But if you really like Veiled and haven't read EIT, you might want to check it out. ;-)

Ada Palomino is an 18 year old fashion blogger who's had the world practically at her feet most of her life. But 3 years ago, her older sister Perry was involved in some dark, paranormal stuff that spilled over into Ada's life. To her credit, Ada always supported her sister, even when what Perry was experiencing sounded unbelievable. Two years ago, the entire Paolomino family was in New York in a search for Perry's then boyfriend, Dex, and his supposed brother Michael; the trip ended with the death of Perry's and Ada's mother. Perry is now married and living in Seattle with Dex. Ada and her father still live in the family home in Portland, Oregon.

When Veiled starts, we see that Ada is experiencing her own coming-of-age... a little unsure about her future and still healing after the events in New York. It doesn't help that her dad has put their family home up for sale, but Ada figures that he needs a change, too.

Then Ada starts experiencing "exploding head syndrome" - look it up! - and having strange dreams involving her mother and a strange, yet familiar man named Jay. Ada is trying to sort through what's happening to her, unsure if she's experiencing true paranormal events or just dealing with the syndrome as she continues to heal from her mother's death. But when new neighbors move in next door, including 2 borders (Jacob and Jay), and Ada realizes that Jay next door is the Jay from her dreams... things really start to happen!

Yes, it's creepy and scary, but it's also sexy and sweet. Ada realizes that she has her own story - her own fate - and the paranormal is part of it. No longer can she just be "normal" or get back to "normal", because her norm has changed. It creates angst and confusion, but thankfully, her sister Perry and brother-in-law Dex ar there to help. As is Jay... her Guardian.

But I'm not going to spoil the book for you - you've got to read it for yourself! Just be forewarned that it does contain some dark subject matter re demons and things that go bump in the night.

One of the great things about the book is, it's a standalone, so there is an ending without a cliff - LOL! And Romance is one of its many genres; if you know anything about what it means to be in the Romance genre, you'll be pleased at the ending - but I guarantee that you won't be able to predict how you get there! My hope is that Ms. Halle will have the the time and inspiration to write more about Ada in future. (Pretty please, if possible!)

If you love Veiled as much as I did and you haven't read EIT, Darkhouse is the first book.

Even if you decide Veiled isn't for you, please do check out one of the many other books that Ms. Halle writes, such as The Pact or Racing the Sun or Love in English.
So good. So, so, so good.

EIT is one of my favorite series of all times. Dex and Perry? Ada? Those wonderful gingers? All of the yes. So, of course when I first found out years ago that we would get Little Fifteen (now Veiled for those not in the know), I was pretty much dying from excitement. Then it got postponed indefinitely. I'll admit that I little part of me died when I found out despite the sound reasoning behind it. I'm not going to fault a writer for not being ready to write. So, needless to say when Veiled first showed up on Wattpad, there was a crazy mix of excitement with a little bit of freaking out. How in the world was this going to compare with something like EIT?

Let me tell you that it does. Is it the same? Of course not. Ada and Jay more than hold their own. It still has all of the creeptacular (hello.. the Nun) scenes that you would expect from this world, but the undercurrent behind it is different. It feels different. It's Little Fifteen and she is all grown up, a force to be reckoned with and you (and Jay) are hung up on her every word as you go along for the ride. And what a ride it is. Every single page keeps you on your toes, wanting to know how everything is going to play out. You are invested from jump, whether you were already a fan or not. To add even more, Karina gives this book that little freaking bow on the top by making sure to really throw in things from past books for her fans...Dex, Perry, the new neighbors (YAY!), and of course learning more about the Jacobs. Insert fangirling noise here.

Anyway. Read this book. Read it. Just do it. If you loved EIT, you should have already read it. If you didn't love EIT, see if this one flips your skirt the way Dex didn't. What are you waiting for?
