Science and Biblical wisdom have been converging. Did you notice? This book challenges the presumption that science is erasing Biblical “claims.” In fact, Schroeder reconciled the 6 days of creation using Einstein and relativity. He shows how Darwinian macro evolution is fatally flawed in science and math. He weaves a case for convergence of knowledge in science and the Bible that strengthens faith. This is a must read book for all thoughtful believers and fair-minded skeptics. The first half of the book is extremely useful bringing physics and statistics into alignment with the Bible. The science is "high" enough to make the case without being impossible to follow. It is fresh and very useful. However, the second half of the book begins to veer into scientific and theological stretching which gets less and less plausible. His argument that the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle is the basis for human free will is a bit much. In dealing with the origins of good and evil, he asserts "sin is not something with which we are endowed ..." which negates the solidly established theology of Original Sin from Adam and Eve.
His recitation of the anthropic design of the universe is really good. For anyone who has not considered how fine tuned the universe is for life, particularly life on earth, it will be breathtaking. His explanation of "why the dinosaurs" is characteristically unique. It might not settle the questions, but it does offer some clues.
In all, the book is informative and insightful. He leans heavily on science and the kabala theological writings. I found the latter to be most interesting because I've never encountered it previously. Get the book. Decide for yourself, if just for the first half of the book.

I do not see a conflict between faith and science, so the concerns that some people have that may lead them to accept or reject this book are not mine. I have come to believe the Christian message through my encounter with Christ on a long pilgrimage with him. Some call this encounter "mystical" and I have come to see that it is. I embrace the wisdom of St. Anselm of Canterbury "I do not seek to understand in order to believe, but I believe in order to understand. For I believe this unless I believe, I will not understand."
I did not know many of the scientific concerns expressed in the book, but after reading the book I do have a better understanding. But I value the Bible not as a book of science, but as a book of wisdom and theology. Thus, this perspective expressed by Schroeder is meaningful to me and is found woven through much in his book "The Bible is the earliest identifiable source of the great conceptual discoveries essential for civilization equality before the law, sanctity of life, dignity of the individual, individual and communal responsibility, peace as an ideal, love as the foundation for justice" (p. 18).
While Gerald Schroeder introduced me to ideas I have for the most part not encountered before, it is his introduction to Talmudic scholars and mystics that is of even greater value to me. I'm glad I persevered through the book, but admit I probably wouldn't have if it weren't the next book we are reading in our Catholic parish book club!
The book received somewhat positive reviews in our Catholic parish book club. While one member did not like it at all, the others did with the reservation that Schroeder looks at the issue from a perspective quite differently from the way Catholics generally do. But for the most part, we appreciated seeing a different perspective.
This book taught me alot about understanding the conflicts that seem to exist between science and Biblical teachings. There is a lot of scientific information that is not easily comprehended by someone who is not familiar with the language of science. Even though I struggled to comprehend it, I was able to get a lot of information that helped me to see that science and the Bible have a lot in common. The conflict between science and the Bible regarding the difference in the time it took for the earth to be created is one topic that is clearly covered .
I enjoyed this trot through various scientific disciplines and attempt to conflate the roots of todays polarized arguments into one.
There is a lot packed into it. You may feel the need to go back and check up on his sources, re-read and research, because his assertions have the impression of fairly haphazard, tentative guesswork.
I'm not sure his interpretations of certain biblical verses are accurate, it would require the original Hebrew and much awareness of context to claim that e.g. biblical time started at the creation of human souls. Does Genesis 127 actually say this? I don't think its clear.
And so on.
He has some interesting ideas and writes about complicated scientific matters in an accessible and very easy-going style.
His premise seems to be that a) Current scientific thought is correct therefore b) The bible must be re-interpreted to fit popular theory.
But why would people of faith (of which I am one) limit God to limited human perception in the first instance? Surely the almighty could have made creation within 6 earth days if he so desired. I don't see the need to invent naturalistic explanations for certain events that we are told are supernatural, that are in any case accepted only by faith.
I taught science in a public school for 31 years. I also worked 6 summers as an environmentalist and 2 in pest control management. The things that I saw in these positions point to uniformity and design. The Science of God helped me understand the reasoning behind the apparent design in all of science God is the designer. This book gives clear scientific evidence of a creator.
